What this PD covers

The Department of Education’s policy (April 2009) is that the principal must implement preventative curriculum for all students.
(6.19 PREVENTION PROGRAMS, Child Protection Policy)

In response to the Gordon Inquiry (2002), the Department is required to report on
compliance with the requirement to introduce protective behaviours into the school
curriculum.

Preventative programs can be part of the health and wellbeing curriculum, and are
fundamental to achieving the best outcomes for all children and to empowering children
who have experienced or are at risk of experiencing harm resulting from abuse and/or
neglect (see www.det.wa.edu.au/childprotection).

This 2 day GDHR training can help you and your school meet this very important requirement. All schools, teachers and other school staff are mandatory reporters of child sexual abuse and this PD will address some common elements.

Other areas include:

  • What IS relationships and sexuality education?
  • Why is relationships and sexuality education a right for all young people?
  • The state of sexual health of young people in Australia
  • Meet the agencies that can help you
  • Interactive strategies for effective relationships and sexuality education in the classroom P-10
  • Using the GDHR Curriculum Support Materials to achieve outcomes in other curriculum areas
  • Latest best practice relationships and sexuality education resources.

The content covered links to issues including

  • Body image
  • Media literacy
  • Early sexualisation of children
  • Resilience
  • Alcohol and other drug use
  • Gender and power
  • Gender stereotypes
  • Respectful relationships
  • Consent
  • Being an ethical bystander
  • Current state and national STI campaigns
  • HIV & AIDS.

This learning opportunity supports the continuing development of educators’ skills and understandings and, most importantly, confidence and competence in the use of the revised GDHR on-line curriculum support materials.

Participants are required to commit to a 2 day workshop in March, then a follow up day in Semester 2.  In line with the World Health Organization’s Health Promoting Schools Framework, at least one teacher and a school nurse from each school are encouraged to attend.  Once you have completed the initial workshop you are supported through phone, email and regular updates on the WA Health Education Services website.
